Tom Hanks interpretará a "Elvis Rojo", colaborador en la campaña electoral de Allende

BERLÍN.- El actor Tom Hanks encarnará en el cine al denominado "Elvis Rojo", Dean Read, el cantante estadounidense que eligió vivir bajo el régimen comunista de la RDA y abrazó la causa revolucionaria conmocionado por la muerte de Salvador Allende.

Hanks pretende empezar el rodaje de la película inspirada en esa figura y que llevará por título "Comrade Rockstar" a principios de año, informa el popular diario berlinés "B.Z.".

De acuerdo con ese rotativo, el actor estadounidense compró hace ya algún tiempo los derechos a su viuda, Renate Blume, y recreará con ello la compleja trayectoria de este personaje de sonrisa inmaculada y cabellera rubia que en lugar de hacer carrera en Hollywood lo hizo en la órbita comunista.

Reed, aclamado por la República Democrática Alemana (RDA) como la antítesis anticapitalista del Presley de Memphis (EE.UU.), apareció muerto el 17 junio de 1986, con 48 años, en el lago a orillas de su casa, en los alrededores de Berlín.

Según ha explicado la propia Blume, en un documental dirigido por el alemán Leopold Grün, Reed sufría por entonces una fuerte depresión, se sentía "abandonado" por el público y echaba de menos su país, al que había dado la espalda décadas atrás.

El documental, estrenado en Alemania en la última Berlinale, reconstruía la biografía de quien actuó de "cowboy" en películas de calidad dudosa para la RDA y filmes de propaganda del régimen germano-oriental, pero que además ello fue entusiasta colaborador en la campa&ntile;a electoral de Allende y miliciano en el Líbano.

Se le conoció como el Presley "rojo" porque en sus inicios buscó la fama apuntalado en una voz y un estilo similares al de Memphis. Nacido en Colorado, en 1938, se hizo célebre entre el público de la RDA como héroe que renegó de EE.UU. para abrazar el comunismo.

Aprendió español en el Chile de Allende, luego pasó un tiempo en Argentina, de ahí fue a la Unión Soviética y luego a la RDA. Volvió a Chile, ya con Pinochet, para entonar con los mineros un legendario "Venceremos," en 1983, y estuvo entre los fervientes admiradores de Yaser Arafat.

Del apasionamiento revolucionario sincero pasó a dejarse engatusar por el aparato de la RDA, que lo convirtió en uno de sus "artistas protegidos". Tuvo una larga lista de esposas, novias y amantes, pero no superó su declive como artista. Deprimido por la falta de éxito y también por sus altibajos sentimentales, Reed se dio su último baño en un lago de las afueras de Berlín donde lo encontraron muerto.

Berlin.- Actor Tom Hanks will be the "Red Elvis" in a movie about Dean Reed's life, the North American singer who chose to live under the communist regime of GDR, and later embraced the revolutionary party shocked by the death of Salvador Allende.

Hanks is planning to start shooting the movie inspired by this figure and whose title will be "Comrade Rockstar", at the beginning of this year, according to the popular Berlin newspaper "B.Z.".

According to this source of information, the North American actor already bought some time ago, the rights to his widow Renate Blume, and will recreate the complex acting career of this celebrity of blonde hair and an immaculate smile, who instead of making his career in Hollywood, he did it in the communist orbit.

Reed, acclaimed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as the complete opposite of Presley from Memphis, (USA) appeared dead on June 17th 1986 when he was 48 years old, in the banks of the lake bordering his home, in the suburbs of Berlin.

According to what Blume has to say in a documentary directed by the German Leopold Grün, Reed was undergoing a big depression. He was feeling neglected by his public and was missing his own country, which he had turned his back decades ago.

The documentary released in the last Berlinale in Germany, reconstructed the biography of whom played as a "cowboy" in films of doubtful quality for the GDR, plus films of propaganda in favor of the German-Oriental regime. In addition, he was an enthusiastic collaborator in the electoral campaign of Allende and a militiaman in the Lebanon.

He was known as the "Red Elvis" because in his beginnings, he used his voice and his style similar to the one in Menphis, looking for fame. He was born in Colorado in 1938, he became famous among the GDR public, and as an hero when he denied his country to became a communist. He learnt Spanish in Chile, in Allende's time. Afterwards, he spent some time in Argentina, from there, he went to the Soviet Union and later to GDR.

He came back to Chile already with Pinochet in charge of the country, to sing along with the miners the legendary "Venceremos" in 1983. He was counted as one of the most Yaser Arafat passionated fans.

Because of his truly revolutionary passion, he was taken by the GDR, as one of it's "protected artists". He had a long list of wives, girfriends and lovers, but he couldn't overcome his fall as an artist. Depressed by his lack of success and also by his relationships problems, Reed took his last swim in a lake on the outskirts of Berlin, where he was found dead.
