Dean Reed loves us and adore us too

He confesses that he wanted to come back to Chile for a long time, and the commotion caused by the riots on Thursday 11th made him to decide to come earlier. He won't give any kind of public presentations because he came as a tourist for a week. "Nevertheless, I brought my guitar with me, so if my friends ask me to sing for them I couldn't say no".

It has been a long time since Dean Reed was in the first place of the rankings with themes as "Our Summer Romance", "I Ain't Got You", "Annabelle or "The Search" compiting with Elvis Presley, Neil Sedaka and Paul Anka. Smiling, he remembers the time when he needed a police escort to go from the Hotel Carrera to Radio Mineria located in Diagonal Cervantes to perform.

Since then, in 1962 he was already polemical: During the development of the world championship he invited the Sovietic Union fooball players to one of his concerts. This was a motive for a formal protest from the American Embassy.

His following visit was in 1966 after being expelled from Argentina by the President Ongania's regime, through an special decree. At that time he was keeping his popularity with themes as "Maria" and "La Bamba".

In his 1970's trip to Chile, he continues being polemic: In August 31st of 1970 was arrested by the Chilean police in front of the Consulate of United States for washing the northamerican flag "spotted by the Viet-Nam war and the racial discrimination", according to the speech he read in that occasion. He was released few hours later.

During the Unidad Popular regime, he visited the country twice. He used to sing in march and protests, songs far from being commercials, such as "No nos moveran" and "Somos los Revolucionarios".

Many years later, we have him sitting in his friend's living room actress Maria Maluenda. We can see him more mature but still handsome and with that "cowboy look" which at that time made teenagers crazy.

He lives in East Germany, he is married to Renate Blume and has 3 children.

In between the years 72 and 81 he made 5 movies. Two of them were very popular: "Blood brothers" and "El Cantor". This last one dedicated to Victor Jara. Actually, he's working en the movie "Wounded Knee" about an epic and bloody indian revololultion in United States.

He doesn't hide his social and popular tendencies but says that this commintment shouldn't absorb his artist activities. "In my concerts I include themes with social content, but also romantic songs or rock themes. I think that the privilege of being an artist must be assumed in an integral way. An artist must make people happy but at the same time must contribute to improve the world and work for the peace."

"Second motherland"

He recognizes that he's very concern about the country events: "It's because I love Chile as my second motherland. The evolution of my thought was parallel to the political evolution of Chile. The first time I came was under Alessandri's presidency, next was Frei and afterwards when Allende won. Now...we will see. I hope that the differences can be resolved in a pacific way, and to be back again to the democratic system".
