La insólita historia del Elvis rojo: el gringo que saltó a la fama gracias a Chile

Acá conoció a Víctor Jara, a Neruda y a los Parra. Después cantó para Arafat, Daniel Ortega y otros líderes de talla mundial.

Elvis llevaba cinco años, varios discos y cientos de movimientos de pelvis cuando llegó a Chile su versión roja. Bueno, para ser más precisos hay que decir que Dean Reed, el cantante country que con los años se transformaría en el rockstar del lado marxista del mundo, recién pintaba colorado cuando apareció por estos lares.

Y cantaba más o menos. Pero eso no fue impedimento para que su canción "Nuestro romance de verano" llegara al número uno del ranking local. Su disquera, la Capitol Records, no dudó un minuto en mandarlo a cosechar éxitos por estos lados, mal que mal en su natal Estados Unidos no prendía mucho mientras que en Chile, Argentina y Perú, su voz mediocre, sus ojos azules y su pelo rubio prometían incendiar el ambiente.

Claro que al final el incendiado fue Reed. Políticamente hablando, eso sí. Cuentan en "Página 12" que cuando el Elvis Rojo llegó al aeropuerto de Santiago las calcetineras de 1961 lo esperaban entre gritos y pancartas. El tipo quedó impresionado, tanto como estaría después, al acercarse y frecuentar a Víctor Jara, Pablo Neruda y a los Parra.

En Chile, el estadounidense comenzó a llenar estadios en plena Guerra Fría gracias a sus versiones de los éxitos de Joan Baez y su puño levantado al son del grito "¡Venceremos!".

Pero hubo más que recitales. Fue en Chile que este vaquero disidente - cuyos pasos latinoamericanos están por aparecer en un libro que se prepara en Argentina y que podría llegar al cine en el pellejo de Tom Hanks - dio lo que él llamó su primer paso hacia la vida rebelde. Comenzaban los años setenta cuando tomó la bandera de Estados Unidos y partió a pararse en frente de su embajada en Santiago, donde comenzó a lavarla y refregarla como protesta por la guerra de Vietnam. Lo tomaron preso, pero fue oportunamente "rescatado" por un llamado de su propio consulado.

Esta llamada más el hecho de que lavara la bandera en vez de quemarla echó a correr el rumor de que Reed podía ser un agente encubierto de la inteligencia norteamericana, rumor que persistió en el tiempo, pero que no llegó a comprobarse.

Cuando Salvador Allende era elegido Presidente, Reed ya se perfilaba como la estrella más importante del bloque socialista, gracias a su previo paso por el Congreso de Helsinki en 1965, donde llegó como representante de Argentina, país que lo deportó en 1966 por decisión del gobierno militar de turno.

El cowboy viajó por el mundo soviético cantando para sus principales líderes. Estuvo con Arafat, con Breshnev, con Daniel Ortega. Así hasta que apareció muerto en 1986, en un lago de Berlín Oriental. Dicen que lo mataron los servicios secretos de algún país socialista, pero también dicen que se suicidó después de que en la Plaza Roja comenzaran a escucharse los primeros acordes de rock occidental.

Elvis was singing for about five years with his pelvic movements and had several records, when his red version arrived to Chile. Well, to be more precise we must say that Dean Reed, the country singer whom through the years would became the rockstar from the left side of the world, was just turning red when showed up around here.

His singing was ok. But that didn't stop his song "Our Summer Romance" to become number 1 of our local ranking. His record company, Capitol Records didn't doubt for one minute in sending him down here, in order to receive the success from this part of the world. Besides, he was not very hot in his country United States. While in Chile, Argentina, and Peru his mediocre voice, his blue eyes and his blonde hair, were setting on fire the environment.

But talking as politics, the only one burnt was Reed, of course. It says "Página 12" that when the Red Elvis arrived in the Santiago airport in 1961, the teenagers were waiting for him screaming and carrying signs. This phone call plus the fact of washing the flag instead of burning it, started the rumor that Reed could be a secret agent of the American intelligence. This rumor lasted for a long time, but it could not be proved.

When Salvador Allende was elected President, Reed was already getting very close to be the most important star of the socialist block, thanks to his visit to the Helsinki Congress in 1965, where he was representing Argentina. He was deported from this country in 1966 by a military action.

The cowboy traveled around the world singing for his main leaders. He was with Arafat, Brezhnev, Daniel Ortega. He was like this until he was found dead in 1986 in a Lake of East Berlin. It has been said that he was killed by the secret services of some socialist country, but also it is said that he committed suicide after he found out that the first chords of occidental rock were heard in the Red Square.

Elvis war gerade fünf Jahre bekannt, hatte diverse Platten und hunderte Anhänger der Pelvis-Bewegung, als seine rote Version nach Chile kam. Gut, um es genau zu sagen, Dean Reed, der Country-Sänger, der sich im Laufe der Jahre in einen marxistischen Welt-Rockstar verwandelte, frisch gestrichen mit Farbe, als er in unseren Breiten auftauchte.

Und er sang mehr oder weniger (gut). Aber das hinderte sein Lied "Our Summer Romance" nicht daran, auf Platz eins der örtlichen Hitparade zu steigen. Seine Plattenfirma, Capitol Records, zweifelte nicht einen Augenblick daran, dass er in diesen Breiten Erfolg erlangen wird. Eher schlecht als recht zündete er in seinem Heimatland USA, doch in Chile, Argentinien und Peru entflammten seine Stimme, seine blauen Augen und seine blonden Haare seine Umgebung.

Klar, dass Reed am Ende das Feuer entfachte. Auf jeden Fall politisch gesehen. "Página 12" zufolge erwarteten den roten Elvis bei seiner Ankunft am Flughafen von Santiago 1961 die Mädchen schreiend und mit Transparenten. Der Mann war beeindruckt, genauso wie später, als er Víctor Jara, Pablo Neruda und die Parras kennenlernte.

In Chile beginnt der Amerikaner zur Hochzeit des Kalten Krieges Stadien zu füllen, dank seiner Versionen der Hits von Joan Baez und seiner erhobenen Faust beim Singen von "¡Venceremos!".

Aber es waren mehr als nur Konzerte. Es geschah in Chile, dass er seinen ersten Schritt ins Rebellelleben machte, so sagte der dissidentische Cowboy - dessen Reisen durch lateinamerikanische Länder in einen Buch erscheinen werden, das in Argentinien vorbereitet wird und der auch ins Kino kommen könnte, in einem Film von Tom Hanks. Anfang der 70er Jahre nahm er die Fahne der Vereinigten Staaten und wusch sie vor seiner Botschaft in Santiago, um sie zu reinigen als Protest gegen den Vietnamkrieg. Er wurde verhaftet, aber durch einen rechtzeitigen Anruf seines eigenen Konsuls "gerettet".

Dieser Anruf sowie die Tatsache, dass er die Fahne gewaschen statt verbrannt hat, brachte das auch später wiederkehrende Gerücht in Umlauf, dass Reed ein verdeckter CIA-Agent sei, was ihm aber nie nachgewiesen werden konnte.

Als Salvador Allende zum Präsidenten gewählt wurde, war Reed schon zum wichtigsten Star des Ostblocks geworden, dank seiner vorherigen Anwesenheit beim Weltfriedenskongress in Helsinki 1965 als Vertreter Argentiniens, des Landes, welches ihn 1966 auf Beschluss der Militärregierung auswies.

Der Cowboy reiste durch die sowjetische Welt und sang vor den Staatsoberhäuptern. Er traf sich mit Arafat, mit Breschnew, mit Daniel Ortega. Das ging so bis er 1986 tot in einem See in Ostberlin gefunden wurde. Man sagte, dass er von einem Geheimdienst eines sozialistischen Landes ermordet wurde, aber auch, dass er Suizid beging, weil nun auf dem Roten Platz die ersten Akkorde des westlichen Rock'n'Roll zu hören waren.
