The year that Dean Reed was Victor Jara

By Sergio Benavides

Sometimes, life has it's weirdness. This time, is one mixed with history. "El cantor" is the movie that the "Red Elvis" made in honor of Victor Jara almost four years after his death. Today arrive to Chile the copy that will be shown just one time, December 16th at 10:00 PM in Lastarria 90.

When Dean Reed sang "Ni chicha ni limona" and mispronounced the word "volereta" instead of "voltereta" was only a detail. The musician that at the end of the 60's choose the revolutions, when his image was the stereotype of the American Dream. Came to Chile during Allende's presidency to learn about the socialism. Ending as a friend of Victor Jara, decided to honour him with this movie.

"El Cantor" is the movie made in 1977 in east Germany, which script was a biography of Victor Jara, and where he played his role in order to help the political exhiles, and at the same time to tip the balance in favour of the cold war. A movie that came to Chile 30 years later, thanks to the In-edit festival.

An idea that occurred to him to exploit the cause. This movie was not a big succes, but today is an historical piece, not only by the appearance of celebrities as Isabel and Angel Parra or Clodomiro Almeyda, but for the effort to make in the GDR the streets look like the ones in Santiago, it's population, the murals of the Ramona Parra's brigade and the sets where the Unidad Popular had it's quarters.

Dean dyed his hair and grew mustache to play Victor. With accent, wearing a poncho and the intention to summarize this history, which it would have the same result if the actor had been Elvis Presley or Frankie Avalon. But they were not communists and Reed was. An affiliation that according to the documentary "The Red Elvis" cost him some sadness. This movie tell us that when his carreer was over, he couldn't go back to United States even when he missed it so much. His carreer was already half rotten because of implementations and artistic deadlocks. His death was strange and many people think it was a suicide.

LUCHIN (FROM THE MOVIE): "That was my first death"

Alvaro Camu Parrau, is today the director of the pedagogical Center Goethe Institute in Chile. In 1977, he was 11 years old when he was choosen to play de role of Luchin "the one that Victor Jara picks up from a shanty town," he recalls. We were chosen in a place that it supposed to be East Berlin, precisely from the community where the exhiled were living, comments. Also from there, were the two girls who played Manuela and, Amanda plus another children playing extras.

Camu remembers that the setting was good, they even got a convertible Citroen and lots of Chileans to participated in this crazy idea, written, directed and played by Dean Reed in the main role. For this pourpose he used the DEFA studios where he used to make his cowboy/indian movies. "I am not very clear if Dean was Victor's friend, but probably more than once they saw each other," comments Camu, who explains that there were funny comments about Reed's performance, who was singing a song and his movements were of a rock & roll singer. But the people who visited the cinema Kosmos in Karl Marx Street on January 1st, 1978 were moved. It has been 3 years and a little more since the coup d'etat and the disappearance of activists and the exiles. In the Chilean way, among laughs and tears, the movie remains as a tribute.

A gun shot looks for Victor. Instead Daniel (Luchin) stuck his head from the car driving him for a ride. It was the Intelligence Service who wants to kill the singer. The child is the one getting the impact. "That was my first death," Camu remembered...
