Yo conocí a Elvis rojo

Siempre Dean era número puesto en los actos que realizábamos cada 11 de septiembre o cuando ocurría en Chile algún acontecimiento sobre el que queríamos llamar la atención.

Se anuncia la filmación de una película de Steven Spielberg en torno al cantante norteamericano Dean Reed, cuyo protagonista sería Tom Hanks. Dean era un cantante discreto que vestía como cowboy y fue famoso en los países del llamado "socialismo real" en la década de los '70. Vino a Chile en 1961 y actuó en la radio Minería. Era un joven apuesto, rubio, de ojos azules, que apenas balbuceaba el español y que entusiasmaba a las calcetineras quienes lo asediaban en busca de algún autógrafo.

Empezaba en Chile el auge de la canción nueva, con sus protestas contra el sistema. Aparecían en la escena Violeta Parra y Víctor Jara. La Revolución Cubana y luego la Guerra de Vietnam enfervorizaban a los jóvenes que se expresaban en las grandes manifestaciones públicas. El mismo Dean expresó después que aquí fue conquistado para las causas revolucionarias. En EEUU era casi desconocido, existían muchos otros cantantes como él, pero ninguno se proclamaba izquierdista. En Chile, Dean lavó la bandera de su país con un balde enfrente de la embajada y participó en desfiles con la guitarra en alto. Regresó a Chile en varias ocasiones. Ya no le interesaba ser un simple intérprete del rock de Elvis Presley ni del folk del oeste. La parecía que su misión era otra y no hacía cuestión de los contratos ni del pago por sus actuaciones.

Lo suyo era ser un yankee rebelde y antiimperialista. Como tal, actuó en Cuba, en Vietnam, en medio de los sandinistas de Nicaragua y de los guerrilleros palestinos de Arafat. Sus insignias eran el Che, Fidel, Ho Chi Minh y, después, Salvador Allende y Víctor Jara. Era uno de los pocos yankees a los que tenían acceso los muchachos ansiosos de bailar y escuchar rock en los países socialistas. Digerían los mensajes políticos de Dean, pero lo que en verdad les interesaba era ingresar a lo que estaba oficialmente prohibido.

Se estableció definitivamente en el dividido Berlín, capital de la República Democrática Alemana. Allí le encontramos cuando vino el exilio y fuimos acogidos en la RDA para trabajar en la radio, en un programa de solidaridad con Chile. A menudo aparecía en el comití de exiliados chilenos para ofrecer sus servicios en todo lo que estuviera de su parte. Vivía con su mujer alemana en una bella casa en las riberas del lago Mugelsee, que recorre todo el territorio de Berlín. La verdad es que no tenía mayor éxito entre los jóvenes de la RDA. Ellos conocían a los cantantes y las bandas pop que se filtraban por la TV occidental, que resultaba imposible censurar o prohibir. Dean les parecía anticuado.

Había filmado en la RDA varias películas que eran los westerns de pacotilla que protagonizó en Italia. Una de sus obsesiones era llevar a la pantalla la vida de Víctor Jara y convenció a los cineastas de la RDA. La película se llamó "El cantor" y fue un desastre. El rubio Dean Rean no tenía nada que ver físicamente con el moreno Víctor Jara, de rasgos indígenas y populares. Dean se tiñó el pelo, cantó en español macarrónico y convirtió la historia de Víctor Jara en un melodrama indigerible.

Los chilenos apenas lo criticamos. Valía la intención a pesar de que el film pasó inadvertido y no fueron apreciados sus buenos recursos técnicos. Después, Dean nos invitó a almorzar a su casa. Paseamos por la orilla del lago y nos confesó con tristeza que consideraba su carrera fracasada. No le contrataban ni siquiera en la URSS ni en la RDA. No se entendía con su mujer y no podía ingresar a Estados Unidos. Su mayor aspiración, en ese momento, era volver a cantar en Chile post Pinochet. Le parecía que era su segunda patria, pero el fin de la dictadura no se divisaba siquiera. Estábamos en mayo de 1986.

Apenas unas semanas después nos enteramos de la aparición de su cadáver en el lago Zeuthener. Se dijo que se trató de un suicidio, que salió en un bote y se lanzó a las aguas, que eran profundas. Nos cuesta creer la versión de que haya sido un agente de la CIA descubierto y asesinado por la Stasi. Sus íntimos nos aseguran que sufría de una gran depresión y que su ruptura matrimonial era inevitable. Cualquiera que sea la verdad, el gringo que conocimos era como un niño generoso y solidario con las causas de un mundo que no era el suyo y que -decía- descubrió en Chile un camino para la vida y su canto.

A movie directed by Steven Spielberg and played by Tom Hanks, about the North American singer Dean Reed is going to be filmed. Dean was a discreet singer who used to dress as a cowboy, and in the 70's he became famous in the "True Socialist" countries. He came to Chile in 1961 and performed in Radio Mineria. He was a handsome guy, blonde, blue eyes who hardly stammered spanish and was besieged by teenagers looking for an autograph.

In Chile was the beginning of the new protest songs against the system. Singers as Violeta Parra and Víctor Jara appeared in scene. The Cuban Revolution, the Vietnam War enraged the young people who expressed themselves in public manifestations. Dean himself expressed that he was conquered by the revolutionary causes. In the USA he was almost unknown, there were many singer as him, but none of them proclaimed being from the left wing. In Chile in front of his Embassy Dean washed his American flag in a bucket, and participated in marches holding up his guitar. He came back to Chile in several occasions. He was not interested in just being an interpreter of Elvis Presley's rock and roll or west folk. It seems to him that his mission was another one, and he didn't care much about his contracts or the money he was going to get for his performances

His thing was to be a rebel Yankee and go against the imperialism. So, he performed in Cuba, in Vietnam in the middle of the Sandinistas in Nicaragua and the Arafat's guerrilla fighters. His symbols were Che, Fidel, Ho Chi Minh and afterwards Salvador Allende and Victor Jara. In the socialist countries, he was one of the few Yankees easy to approach by the youth anxious of dancing, and listening rock and roll. They digested Dean's political messages, but their truly interest was what was officially forbidden to them.

He settled down in the divided Berlin, capital of the German Democratic Republic. We found him there when the exile came, and we were protected by the GDR to work in radio, in a solidarity program for Chile. Often he showed up in the Chilean committee for refugees to offer his services and help in everything he could. He lived with his German wife in a beautiful home in the shore of lake Mugelsee, that runs through the Berlin territory. The truth was that he was not very successful among the RDA youth. They knew singers and pop bands through the TV coming from the west, what was impossible to censor or forbid. Dean seemed to them old fashioned.

In the RDA he had filmed several movies, they were the cheap westerns made in Italy. One of his obsessions was to take to the big screen Victo Jara's life, and he convinced the RDA cinematographers. The movie was called "El Cantor" and it was a disaster. The blonde Dean Reed didn't have anything to do physically with the dark Victor Jara with popular indian features. Dean dyed his hair, sang in a poor spanish and converted Victor Jara's history in an indigestible melodrama.

The Chilean didn't criticized him. His intention was good, in spite that the film was unnoticed and it's special effects were not appreciated. Later, Dean invited us to have lunch to his home. We took a walk around the edge of the lake, and sadly he confessed us that he thought his career was over. He didn't get any contracts from anywhere, not even from URSS or from RDA. He was not getting along with his wife and he couldn't get back to USA. His goal at this time, was to return to sing in Chile, post Pinochet. It seemed to him that was his second motherland, but the end of the dictatorship was still very far away. It was May 1986.

Just a few weeks later, we learnt that his corpse was found in the Lake Zeutherner. It was said that he committed suicide, that he left in a boat and threw himself into the deep waters. It's hard to believe the version saying that he was an uncovered CIA agent and was murdered by the Stasi. His closest friends reassure us that he was going through a big depression and the breakup of his marriage was inevitable. Whatever the truth was, the gringo we knew was a good kid generous and liable with issues of a world that was not his, and according to what he said, found in Chile a way for life and for his singing.

Angekündigt ist ein Film von Steven Spielberg mit Tom Hanks über den nordamerikanischen Sänger Dean Reed. Dean war ein dezenter Sänger, der sich wie ein Cowboy kleidete, und der in den 70er Jahren in den Ländern des sogenannten Realsozialismus berühmt wurde. 1961 kam er nach Chile und trat beim Rundfunksender Mineria auf. Er war ein netter junger Mann, blond mit blauen Augen, der kaum spanisch stammeln konnte und von jungen Autogrammjägerinnen belagert wurde.

In Chile begann gerade die Bewegung des "Neuen Liedes" als Protest gegen das System. Auf der Szene erschienen Sänger wie Violeta Parra und Victor Jara. Die kubanische Revolution und der Vietnamkrieg brachten die Jugend auf, was in großen öffentlichen Manifestationen zum Ausdruck kam. Dean Reed selbst sagte später, dass er hier von der revolutionären Sache gefesselt wurde. In den USA war er so gut wie unbekannt. Es gab viele Sänger wie ihn, aber niemand von denen bekannte sich zum linken Flügel. Vor seiner Botschaft in Chile wusch Dean seine amerikanische Flagge in einem Eimer und nahm mit seiner Gitarre an Demonstrationen teil. Er kam zu verschiedenen Anlässen nach Chile zurück. Er war nicht daran interessiert, nur ein Interpret von Elvis Presleys Rock 'n' Roll oder westlicher Folkmusik zu sein. Seine Mission schien eine andere zu sein, dabei nahm er keine Rücksicht auf seine Verträge oder das Honorar für seine Auftritte.

Ein Yankee-Rebell und Antiimperialist zu sein war seins. In diesem Sinne trat er in Kuba, in Vietnam, inmitten der Sandinisten in Nikaragua und vor Arafats palästinensischen Kämpfern auf. Seine Vorbilder Che, Fidel, Ho Chi Minh und schließlich Salvador Allende und Victor Jara. In den sozialistischen Ländern war er einer der wenigen Yankees, zu denen die Jugendlichen mit ihrer Sehnsucht nach Tanzen und Hören von Rock 'n' Roll Zugang hatten. Sie verdauten Deans politische Botschaften, aber ihr wahres Interesse war auf das gerichtet, was ihnen offiziel verboten war.

Er ließ sich im geteilten Berlin, in der Hauptstadt der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik nieder. Wir trafen ihn dort, als das Exil kam und wir unter dem Schutz der DDR für den Rundfunk an einem Solidaritätsprogramm fü Chile arbeiteten. Er kam oft im Komitee der Exilchilenen vorbei um seine Dienste und Hilfe anzubieten. Er lebte mit seiner deutschen Frau in einem schönen Haus am Müggelsee am Rande Berlins. In Wirklichkeit war er nicht sehr erfolgreich bei den DDR-Jugendlichen. Sie kannten Sänger und Pop-Bands aus dem Westfernsehen, was die Zensoren nicht verbieten konnten. Dean kam ihnen altmodisch vor.

Der Film hieß "El Cantor" und war ein Desaster. Der blonde Dean Reed hatte überhaupt keine physische Ähnlichkeit mit dem dunklen Victor Jara mit den typischen indigenen Gesichtszügen. Dean färbte sein Haar, sang in schlechtem Spanisch und verwandelte Victor Jaras Leben in ein unverdauliches Melodram.

Die Chilenen kritisierten ihn nicht. Die Absicht war gut, obwohl der Film unbeachtet blieb und die technische Umsetzung nicht gelungen war. Später lud uns Dean zum Essen in sein Haus ein. Wir spazierten am Ufer des Sees entlang und er erzählte uns traurig, dass er glaube, seine Karriere sei am Ende. Er bekam keine Verträge mehr, weder von der UdSSR noch von der DDR. Es lief nicht gut mit seiner Frau und er konnte auch nicht zurück in die USA. Zu dieser Zeit war es sein Ziel, nach Chile zurückzugehen und dort zu singen, gegen Pinochet. Es schien ihm seine zweite Heimat zu sein, aber das Ende der Diktatur war noch weit entfernt. Das war im Mai 1986.

Nur ein paar Wochen später erfuhren wir, dass sein Körper im Zeuthener See gefunden worden war. Es hieß er habe Suizid verübt, er sei mit einem Boot hinausgefahren und dann ins tiefe Wasser gesprungen. Schwer zu glauben ist die Version, nach der er ein CIA-Agent gewesen sei, der von der Stasi ermordet wurde. Seine engen Freunde versicherten uns, dass er an Depressionen und am Scheitern seiner Ehe litt. Was auch immer die Wahrheit war, der Gringo den wir kannten war ein großzügiger Kerl, solidarisch mit den Weltangelegenheiten die nicht seine waren, und einer der - nach eigenen Worten - in Chile einen Weg zu leben und zu singen gefunden hatte.
