Lad Nips Balky Mule In 110-Mile, 2-Day-RaceDenver Post SpecialGUNNISON, Colo., July 23. - A Wheat Ridge track star, 17, trudged into town here Sunday three minutes ahead of a balky mule, ending a 110-mile race to prove man is faster than mule. The runner was Dean Reed, who collapsed at the finish line. He collected a 25-cent bet from Bill Smith of Montrose, a horse wrangler, who came in three minutes later on his mule, Speedy. The pair raced from Gunnison to the VC Bar ranch near Lake City, 55 miles away, Friday and Saturday. Reed was 14 minutes behind at the halfway point. Reed passed the mule on a long downhill stretch and was helped further when the mule balked at two bridges and had to be led across. |
