The Ballad of Deano

Glyn Bailey (2007)

Dean could have been a cowboy in another age
He was tall, he was lean,
He was sporty and keen
He could walk on his hands nearly all day long
Yeh he was so strong
But Dean didn't fit US politics
For he'd side with the poor and not with the rich
There was no place for commies in Colorado
So he had to go

He could sing, he could act, some said neither too well
But he looked so damn good, so what the hell
He went out to Hollywood to make a name
And that was Deano
Well they bought and sold him, it's all in the game
That's how it is when you're courting fame
He got tied in a contract
Leading nowhere
So he had to go
Down to Santiago...

Yeh he headed down south, down to Chile
In the days of Allende before Pinochet
Where his views were in tune
With the mood of the day
And he had a hit song
And the crowd sang along
With Deano...

When the Coup came he could've been dead
He got thrown into jail for the things that he said
An American passport saved his head
But he had to go...
Well lucky for Dean his fame had spread
He was invited East to sing for the reds
A communist Elvis was something to be
In the 70's
So he had to go
Out to Moscow...

Well he learned Marx and Lenin and found it the truth
And so in love with America were Soviet youth
They got their tame rock'n'roller who lived the dream
Yeh their Yankee star
And they all chanted for
Deano

And so for a time Dean had it all
That was all on offer behind the Berlin Wall
Dean's music sold in the state record stores
He made Elvis-type movies by the score
Didn't make money, but what mattered more
Was the love he received
Yeh that mattered to Dean

Well stardom is fleeting, it's all in the game
Into the 80's it wasn't the same
The times were a changing as they always do
'My Yiddisher Mama' was no longer cool
And the thing that Dean now most wanted to do
...was go home

He planned one last great epic on 'Wounded Knee'
About the downtrodden, typical Dean
And he hoped and he schemed that when the film got screened
He could go home
A hero, the people's hero
Deano...

Then came 'Sixty Minutes' a chance to put things straight
To the American people and get past the hate
For a Yankee crooner who crossed to the other side
Of the great divide
The reporting was fair and sympathised
Till the part where they asked if the Berlin Wall
Could be justified?
Well he had to try, he was that kind of guy
Deano had his pride...

And so he blew it right there and then
Everyone could see it except for him
And those enraged vowed to end his days
Yeh the guns were out, they'd take him out
There was no room for Commies in Colorado
And he better not go
It was a crushing blow
He couldn't go home..
Deano

Dean was now was a man out of time
Gorbachev came and things had changed
He was scared that his looks had started to fade
Well at 46 it goes with the age

Now the Russians had home grown bands of their own
No more demand to see him perform
Then he heard that the funding had been withdrawn
Yeh the movie was gone that he spent so long working on
And that was too much to take
And he had to go
Down to the lake
To die a hero
An American hero
Deano

To Dean's fans...

I was a little anxious when submitting the tune 'The Ballad of Deano' for consideration. After all, I never met Dean Reed, having first heard of him many years after his death. Biographies and other sources can be inaccurate. I was concerned about upsetting those who love Dean, by getting things wrong.

It's impossible to fully describe any man's life, especially such an extraordinary one, in a simple song. There will be inevitable omissions and even inaccuracies.

However, I have tried to capture something of the spirit of Dean Reed. The song only exists as a result of reading his amazing story.

It's a real honour for me to have 'The Ballad of Deano' featured on Dean's official website.

Thank you!

An alle Dean Fans,

The Ballad of Deano' eingeschickt habe.

Also musste er gehen

Also musste er gehen

Also musst er gehen

Deano hatte seinen Stolz...

Deano

Your Comments/Eure Kommentare:

Thank you for the wonderful ballade about this brave beautiful and talented man!

I was born in Soviet Union in late 70s but I remember from my childhood his face and voice... and I remember how strongly russians loved him for his talent, honesty and extraordinarity. Recently I found his song Bella Chao and I was crying when I heared him again... He is a real man with real ideals and I'll never forget his smile...

Glyn, thanks for the mighty fine song about my younger brother.

I thought that you would be interested in my thoughts on the part where you said that "things had changed." Made me remember that things had changed partially because of Dean's heroic efforts.

Thanks again for your song. I am sure that Dean would have enjoyed it also.

Dale R. Reed, November 28, 2007

Glyn, Thank you very much. The song really touched my heart.

Lana Davis, October 6, 2007

Thank you Glyn. I liked the ending that he dies a "hero". It preserves some mystery. We need to see more of his films since from Kit & Co and the extracts I've seen from EL CANTOR and others, he may not have been as bad as his detractors make out.
