Dean Reed nació el 22 de septiembre de 1938 en Estados Unidos, pero ahora vive en Italia con su mujer y su hija de año y medio. Posee un vivo sentido realista y gran claridad de ideas. Conoce sus límites y es raro que enfoque sus situaciones desde un punto de vista equivocado. No siente la necesidad de destacar, y le importa mucho su projimo.

La inteligencia y la cultura le atraen más que la seguridad y las comodidades. Dean ha hecho muchas películas en diversos países y varias en España, entre las que destacan "Los tres crisantemos" y "Veinte pasos para la muerte". Pero todavía le falta la película que le gustaría hacer. Esperamos que lo consiga de acuerdo con sus deseos.

La personalidad fisica de este galán, alto, rubio de ojos claros, estoy seguro de que ya llamó la atención de todas las lectoras de la revista cada vez que se publicaron reportajes sobre Dean Reed. Yo tenia deseos de conocerlo más de cerca y describirlo tal como es al natural. Aproveché su estancia en Madrid, donde rodaba su parte de la coproducción hispanoitaliana "Los piratas de la isla Verde", de las firmas Izaro de Madrid, y Ambrosiana, de Roma. Los protagonistas son Dean Reed y Annabella Incontrera, con Alberto de Mendoza, Mary Francis, Paola Gozlini, Sal Borgese, Tito García, Pedro Luis Lozano y Lesley Bailey.

Y nuestra conversación se desarrolló asi:

¿Te gusta como te tratan en España?

Siempre este pueblo ha sido serio y honesto. Cuando da un abrazo un español, sabes que lo da de verdad y de corazón; por eso tengo muchos amigos aquí.

¿Cómo ves nuestro cine actualmente?

Para mí es difícil hablar sobre el cine español, ya que solamente llevo aquí una semana para hacer una coproducción hispanoitaliana, pero de todas formas creo que está saliendo por primera vez fuera (a Italia, Francia, Alemania) en coproducciones. Yo, particularmente, soy un gran admirador de Buñuel.

De todas tus películas, ¿cuál es la que más te satisface?

Quizá es una coproducción hispanoitaliana, "Los tres crisantemos"; pero aún no he hecho lo que más me gustaría hacer. Es el papel de Camilo José Torres, que era un misionero en Colombia y pasó a ser un revolucionario. Lo han matado hace tres a˜os...

¿En dónde te conocen más?

Como cantante, en Argentina y Chile. En Rusia vendí de mi último LP cuatro millones de discos, y cada año voy a dar conciertos.

¿Sabes compaginar tu vida profesional con tu vida intima?

Yo creo que bastante bien, ya que para mí el ser actor no es lo más importante, pues lo hago como podría hacer otro trabajo cualquiera, y creo que, a pesar de las dificultades que a veces surgen, sabemos, mi esposa y yo, compaginarlo bastante bien.

¿Qué es lo que más te importa o necesitas en tu vida?

Dedicar todo mi talento intelectual y físico a ayudar en la lucha por el progreso y la paz de todos los países. No quiero decir con esto que porque yo ayude se va a conseguir algo, pero para mi vida es lo que me llena.

¿Cuál es tu "hobby"?

Todos los deportes. Yo soy del campo y me encantan los caballos. He hecho rodeo tres años; he sido campeón corriendo maratón, y me sigue gustando realizar mis ejercicios todos los días.

¿Qué piensas de la juventud, en general?

Yo soy más optimista que nunca, pues la juventud de Estados Unidos se va en sus vacaciones al Sur a ayudar a los negros en su trabajo para la integración racial, afrontando todos los peligros que hay. La juventud busca nuevos valores y que no sólo importe el dinero, sino intentar conseguir una sociedad más justa.

¿Es igual que nosotros la juventud de los países del Este?

Como es lógico, hay muchas diferencias. Tienen diferentes culturas y educación distintas. Aunque la juventud pregunta igual que aquí, pues quiere hablar con fundamento.

¿Luchas por algún fin?

Yo creo que mi arte, si es un arte, como cantante, actor y escritor, sólo están dedicados a un fin: al progreso social. Quiero un sistema más justo y más digno; mi arte está sólo dedicado a esto.

¿Qué piensas de la cuestión racial?

Es el problema interno más importante de mi país. La mayoría de los que van a la guerra del Vietnam son negros, y para jugarse la vida sirven; pero luego vuelven a su país y no pueden vivir como los demás. Ahora ya no se muestran pacifistas, sino que cogen sus armas y harán una revolución. Pero serán destruidos por defender sus ideales y no poder llevar una vida como cualquier otra persona. Dicen que no tienen ganas de trabajar. ¿Quién tiene ganas de trabajar cuando están pagando a su compañero, por el mismo trabajo que él hace, el doble? En estas condiciones yo tampoco trabajaría con ganas, ni sin ganas...

¿Qué piensas de los "hippies"?

No aceptan nuestra sociedad y no participan, pero se quedan ahí. No saben dar el segundo paso, pues el primero ya está dado y yo lo acepto. No se puede renunciar a una cosa sin crear otra; esto es dar un paso atrás en la historia de la Humanidad, pues en el fondo no saben lo que quieren, ya que no crean sus metas.

¿Hay "hippies" en el mundo oriental?

Si, hay algunos que se dejan el pelo largo y estas cosas, pero el verdadero "hippy" no.

¿Cómo es, en realidad, Dean Reed?

Si no lo sabes después de todas estas preguntas, debes preguntar a mi mujer para que te diga otros aspectos de mi carácter. Pero, en pocas palabras, aunque es muy difícil, te confesaré que soy muy serio y que no he disfrutado de una juventud como los demás. Siempre tuve muchos problemas y me ha gustado luchar en esta vida. No contra mi voluntad, ya que yo soy así y me gusta la lucha, aunque me considero pacifista.

A face to face conversation

Dean Reed was born September 22, 1938 in United States, but now lives in Italy with his wife and daughter who is a year and a half. He is realistic and has clear ideas. He knows his boundries and is uncommon for him to make wrong decisions. He doesn't have the need to stand out and cares about his fellow human beings.

Intelligence and culture are more important for him than security and comfort. Dean has made many movies in different countries, and several in Spain, among them "The three flowers" and "Twenty steps to death". But he is still missing the movie he would like to make. We hope he can realize this project, according to his wishes.

The figure of this heathrobe, tall, blonde and light eyes has caught the attention of the readers of this magazine, every time that we have published articles about him. I wanted to meet him closer, to be able to describe him as he is in the flesh. I took advantage of his stay in Madrid, where he was shooting his part in the movie "The pirats of the Green Island", a coproduction Hispanic/Italian from the companies Izaro from Madrid and Ambrosiana from Rome. The main roles are: Dean Reed, Annabella Incontrera, Alberto Mendoza, Mary Francis, Paola Gozlini, Sal Borgese, Tito Garcia, Pedro Luis Lozano and Lesley Bailey.

Our conversation went like this:

Do you like how you have been treated in Spain?

People in this town are serious and honest. When a Spaniard embraces you, you know that is real, and from the bottom of his heart. That is why I have many friends here.

How do you see our movie business these days?

For me is difficult to speak about the Spanish cinema, I have been here only for a week to make a coproduction Spanish/Italian. Though, I heard that for the first time is going out to different countries (Italy, France and Germany). I am myself, a big fan of Buñuel.

Of all your movies wich one is the one you like the most?

Perhaps one that is a coproduction Spanish/Italian "The three flowers" but I haven't made yet, the one that I would like to make. This is the role of Camilo Torres from Colombia, who after being a missionary, he became a revolutionary. He was killed three years ago...

Where are you more famous?

As a singer, in Argentina and Chile. In Russia, I sold four million copies of my last record, and every year I go there to give concerts.

Do you know how to combine your professional life with your private life?

I think that I do it very good, because for me, the most important thing is not to be an actor. It is a job like any other, and I believe that in spite of the difficulties that sometimes arise, my wife and I, are able to handle them very well.

What is the most important thing in your life, or what do you need?

To dedicate all my intelectual and physical talent to help to the progress and peace of every country. I don't mean that with my help we are going to achieve something, but for me, personally it's satisfying.

What is your hobby?

All kind of sports. I am a country boy and I love horses. I've been in rodeos for three years in a row, I've won a marathon and I exercise every day.

What do you think about the youth in general?

I am more optimistic than ever, because when the young people in United States take their vacations, they go south to help the black people to deal with the racial issues, even when is very dangerous. Young people are looking for new values. Not just for money, but to try to integrate to a more fair society.

Is the young people from the East, similar to ours?

There are many differences, they have different cultures and education. Although they ask questions the same that we do here. They like to have a foundation when they have something to say.

Do you fight for something?

Yes, for the social progress. Being a singer, actor and a writer, I am dedicating my art to this cause. I want a more worthy and fair system.

What do you think of the racism?

In my country is the most important issue. The mayority of the people who goes to the Vietnam War are blacks, they jeopardize their lives, and when they come back to their country, they can't live like the rest of the people. They are not pacifists anymore, they are carrying arms and they would be ready to fight. They will fight for their ideals and for the rights to live a normal life, like everybody else. I think that for this reason, they will be defeated. They say that they don't want to work, but who would like to work if you are seeing that they are paying the double to a white man, for the same work that he is doing? I wouldn't work either...

What do you think of the "Hippies"?

They don't accept our society and they don't participate either, they are stuck. They don't know how to take the next step, they gave the first one and that's it. I accept that, but we can't resign to one thing without having another one coming. This is to step back in the progress of the humankind. They don't know what they want, they don't have goals in life.

Did you find hippies in the Eastern countries?

Yes, there are some with long hair and weird things, but not the real "hippies", no.

How is the real Dean Reed?

If you can't figure it out after all of these questions, you should ask my wife, so she can tell you another aspects of my personality. In a few words, I will tell you that I am a serious person, even when I haven't enjoyed my youth as the rest of the young people. I've always had lots of problems. I have been a fighter and I like it. It hasn't been against my will, I like to fight. Although I consider myself a pacifist.

Dean Reed wurde am 22. September 1938 in den USA geboren, aber jetzt lebt er mit seiner Frau und seiner eineinhalbjährigen Tochter in Italien. Er besitzt einen wachen Sinn für die Realität und eine große Klarheit seiner Ideen. Er kennt seine Grenzen und irrt sich nur selten. Er drängt sich nicht in den Vordergrund und kümmert sich um die Probleme der Menschen in seiner Umgebung.

Intelligenz und Kultur ziehen ihn mehr an als Sicherheit und Bequemlichkeit. Dean hat viele Filme in mehreren Ländern gedreht, darunter auch einige in Spanien, von denen die folgenden hervorzuheben sind: "Los tres crisantemos" ("Die Chrysanthemen-Bande") und "Veinte pasos para la muerte" ("Dein leben ist keinen Dollar wert"). Aber der Film, den er gern drehen würde, fehlt ihm noch. Wir hoffen, dass er es schafft, seinen Traum zu verwirklichen.

Sicherlich sind die Leserinnen unserer Zeitschrift schon durch unsere Reportagen über Dean Reed auf diesen hübschen, großen, blonden jungen Mann mit den blauen Augen aufmerksam geworden. Ich wollte ihn gern näher kennenlernen, um ihn so darzustellen, wie er ist. Ich nutzte seinen Aufenthalt in Madrid, wo ich ihn bei den Dreharbeiten zu der spanisch-italienischen Koproduktion "Los piratas de la isla Verde" ("Piraten der grünen Insel") der Filmgesellschaften Ízaro aus Madrid und Ambrosiana aus Rom traf. Behandelt man dich in Spanien gut?

Die Menschen hier sind immer seriös und ehrlich. Wenn dich ein Spanier umarmt, weißt du, dass er es ehrlich meint und die Umarmung von Herzen kommt. Deshalb habe ich viele Freunde hier.

Wie ist deine Meinung über unser Kino heute?

Für mich ist es schwierig, über das spanische Kino zu sprechen, weil ich erst eine Woche hier bin, um eine spanisch-italienische Koproduktion zu drehen. Aber ich freue mich auf jeden Fall, dass ich schon in einigen Koproduktionen mitgespielt habe (Italien, Frankreich, Deutschland). Ich persönlich bin ein großer Bewunderer von Buñuel.

Welchen deiner Filme findest du am besten?

Vielleicht die spanisch-italienische Koproduktion "Los tres crisantemos" ("Die Chrysanthemen-Bande"). Aber das, was mir am meisten gefallen würde, habe ich noch nicht gemacht. Ich würde gern die Rolle von Camilo José Torres spielen, der Missionar in Kolumbien war und Revolutionär wurde. Er wurde vor drei Jahren ermordet.

Wo bist du am bekanntesten?

Als Sänger in Argentinien und Chile. In Russland wurden von meiner letzten LP vier Millionen Stück verkauft und ich werde dort jedes Jahr Konzerte geben.

Wie vereinbarst du deinen Beruf mit deinem Privatleben?

Ich glaube, sehr gut. Schauspieler sein ist für mich eine Arbeit wie jede andere auch. Trotz der Schwierigkeiten, die es manchmal gibt, glaube ich, dass meine Frau und ich alles gut meistern.

Was bedeutet dir im Leben am meisten? Was brauchst du am nötigsten?

Ich möchte mein ganzes Talent und meine ganze Kraft dafür einsetzen, um für den Fortschritt und den Frieden in allen Ländern zu kämpfen. Damit will ich nicht sagen, dass mein Beitrag dazu etwas bewirkt. Aber mein Leben wird dadurch reicher.

Welches Hobby hast du?

Jede Art von Sport. Ich bin auf dem Land aufgewachsen und mag Pferde. Ich habe drei Jahre lang Rodeo gemacht. Ich war Marathonsieger und mache jeden Tag gern meine Übungen.

Wie denkst du über die Jugend im allgemeinen?

Ich bin so optimistisch wie nie zuvor, denn die Jugendlichen in den USA fahren in ihren Ferien in den Süden, um der schwarzen Bevölkerung bei ihrer Integration zu helfen, und begegnen dabei allen möglichen Gefahren. Die Jugend sucht neue Werte und strebt nach einer gerechteren Gesellschaft, in der nicht nur das Geld zählt.

Sind die Jugendlichen in Ost und West gleich?

Natürlich gibt es viele Unterschiede. Bildung und Kultur sind verschieden. Aber hier wie dort fragen die Jugendlichen viel, denn sie möchten wissen, wovon sie sprechen.

Kämpfst du für ein bestimmtes Ziel?

Ich glaube, alle Künstler wie Sänger, Schauspieler, Schriftsteller sollten nur ein Ziel anstreben: den gesellschaftlichen Fortschritt. Ich möchte ein gerechteres und würdigeres System erreichen. Nur dazu dient meine Kunst.

Wie denkst du über die Rassenfrage?

Das ist das wichtigste interne Problem meines Landes. Die meisten, die in den Vietnamkrieg ziehen, haben eine schwarze Hautfarbe. Sie dienen und setzen dabei ihr Leben aufs Spiel. Aber wenn sie nach Hause zurückkehren, können sie nicht wie die anderen leben. Dann sind sie keine Pazifisten mehr, sondern nehmen ihre Waffen und machen eine Revolution. Aber sie werden zerstört, weil sie ihre Ideale verteidigen und nicht leben dürfen wie jeder andere Mensch. Es heißt, sie hätten keine Lust zu arbeiten. Wer arbeitet schon gern, wenn er weiß, dass sein Kollege für die gleiche Arbeit doppelt so viel Geld erhält? Unter diesen Umständen würde ich auch nicht gern arbeiten und mich wahrscheinlich weigern zu arbeiten...

Wie denkst du über die Hippies?

Sie akzeptieren unsere Gesellschaft nicht und beteiligen sich nicht an ihr, aber sie bleiben hier. Sie wissen nicht, wie sie den zweiten Schritt tun sollen, denn der erste ist schon getan und das akzeptiere ich. Aber man kann nicht auf eine Sache verzichten, ohne eine andere zu kreieren. Das würde einen Schritt zurück in der Geschichte der Menschheit bedeuten. Denn im Grunde wissen sie nicht, was sie wollen, weil sie sich keine Ziele setzen.

Gibt es im Osten Hippies?

Ja, einige lassen sich die Haare lang wachsen und machen ähnliche Sachen. Aber echte Hippies gibt es dort nicht.

Wie ist Dean Reed wirklich?

Wenn du das nach all diesen Fragen immer noch nicht weißt, solltest du meine Frau fragen. Die könnte dir noch mehr über meinen Charakter erzählen. Es ist schwierig, einen Menschen in wenigen Worten zu beschreiben. Aber ich gebe zu, dass ich sehr ernsthaft bin. Meine Jugend war ungewöhnlich. Ich hatte immer viele Probleme und habe in diesem Leben gelernt, zu kämpfen. Ich kämpfe freiwillig, weil ich schon immer gern gekämpft habe. Aber ich halte mich auch für einen Pazifisten.
