DEAN REED - UN AMERICANO EN MOSCOU

Empezaba a caer la tarde cuando oí sonar el teléfono. Al otro lado del hilo hablaba una voz conocida. Era el jefe de Relaciones Públicas de un excelente cantante americano, Dean Reed, quien textualmente me decía: "Acaba de llegar de la Unión Soviética con todo un cargamento de cosas interesantes que contar. Puedes obtener de él una buena información. A las siete te esperamos en mi oficina."

Tuve que darme prisa para ser puntual. Era la primera vez que le tenía ante mí. Sin embargo, al primer golpe de vista me pareció un hombre ameno, cordial y simpático. No en vano alguien le apodó no hace mucho Dean "Simpatía" Reed.

Casi sin proponérmelo, advierto en él "una migaja" de orgullo por haber sido el primer cantante americano que ha atravesado el "telón de acero" por motivos exclusivamente profesionales.

"La gente rusa," empieza diciéndome, "estaba deseosa de ver un cantante norteamericano. Mi debut fue en el Palacio de los Deportes, porque en la Unión Soviética no existe ningún club, y para ver mi actuación, una gran muchedumbre, entre la que figuraban hombres, mujeres, jovencitas y niños, tuvo que estar haciendo cola desde la noche anterior. Fue un éxito apoteósico. En la primera parte sólo canté en una variedad de jazz; pero ya en la segunda, cosas muy modernas."

¿Cómo es la juventud rusa?

"La juventud rusa es igual que la americana y la española; sobre todo, pude apreciar el gran parecido físico entre los jóvenes rusos y los españoles. Posee nivel cultural elevado."

Dean Reed es hombre que responde perfectamente al prototipo de los intelectuales. Es un gran polifacético. Además de cantar, hacer cine y escribir, es un gran apasionado por los idiomas latinos. Habla varios, entre ellos el español, muy a la perfección. En seguida comenzamos a tutearnos con mucha familiaridad. Parece como si nos conociéramos desde hace años.

"Los cantantes más conocidos en la Unión Soviética son: Charles Aznavour, seguramente porque éste ha nacido en Armenia, y en su actuación logró un éxito resonante. Después, Rita Pavone y Los Beatles. Pero españoles no se conoce ninguno. En cambio, Antonio, el gran Antonio, embajador del baile español, es muy querido y venerado por todos. Creo que España debería mandar a Rusia más Antonios, y Rusia debería mandar a España más ballet de Moisseiev."

Hace una pausa, hunde sus labios en el finísimo vaso de cristal, bebe un buen trago de zumo de limón y continúa diciendo:

"Allí los discos sen venden a millares, entre otras cosas, porque son muy baratos. Imagínate que un single sólo vale 12 pesetas en dinero español."

Ante esta información me quedo un poco asombrado, perplejo, y me pregunto a mí mismo: ¿Será posible? ¿Y por qué no los tendremos aquí tan baratos?

"Yo grabí un Long Play de dieciséis canciones; fíjate bien que no son doce, sino dieciséis, y está a la venta por 60 pesetas. Así, que en un espacio récord de tiempo, los discos se hacen millonarios."

¿En tus actuaciones predominaron los adolescentes o la gente madura?

"Un setenta por ciento eran adultos, y el treinta por ciento eran adolescentes. Una cosa digna de mención es que toda la gente me preguntaba por España. Existe todavía cierta fantasía, que los rusos son incapaces de descifrar; pero es indudable el interés de los rusos pro España."

¿Gusto allí la canción moderna?

"Indudablemente. Vuelvo a repetirte que mi viaje a Rusia ha venido a demostrarme algo en lo que ya creía firmemente: la juventud se parece en todos los países. Visité las casas de algunos jóvenes rusos, con los que trabé buena amistad. ¿Sabes lo que me llamó má la atención? Ver en casi todas ellas un ejemplar de 'Don Quijote de La Mancha'. Me dijeron que en este país el libro del inmortal Cervantes es uno de los más vendidos."

¿Qué me dices del "telón de acero"?

"Personalmente no lo noté. A mí me dio la impresión de estar en un país completamente democrático. He gozado de una libertad absoluta, he podido hacer innumerables fotografías, he hablado con la gente por la calle y he hecho todo aquello que me ha apeticido hacer."

Está sentado cómodamente en un amplio butacón y acompaña a cada palabra con un gesto diferente.

"Incluso fui invitado por las autoridades al desfile de la revolución. Yo estaba muy cerca del Presidente. Fue muy bonita la cosa. ¡Ah!, casi se me olvidaba decirte una cosa importante: cada vez que han brindado conmigo, lo han hecho por la paz. Seguramente porque saben las consecuencias que les traería una nueva guerra."

¿Cuántas ciudades has visítado?

"Ocho, y he dado en total 39 conciertos. El próximo año volveré."

Como ya hemos podido apreciar, Dean Reed ha obtenido un clamoroso éxito en la U.R.S.S. Doy un pequeño giro a la entrevista, y pregunto:

¿Qué proyectos tienes para el futuro?

"Es más inmediato es hacer una película junto a Massiel; su título, 'Codo a codo'. Después pasaré unos días de descanso en la Costa del Sol; más tarde iré a Italia para grabar y preparar lo del Festival de San Remo, al cual me presentaré con una canción netamente italiana; de ahí marcharé a Caracas y Estados Unidos, donde permaneceré cuatro semanas, y regresaré de nuevo a España. Entonces te volveremos a llamar y charlaremos otro rato."

A pesar de que la tarde era fría, una vez finalizada la entrevista estuvimos paseando a lo largo de la Gran Vía madrileña. Nuestro paseo vespertino se ve interrumpido repetidas veces por las constantes peticiones de autógrafos de que es objeto Dean. Como nota curiosa diré que Dean Reed es un hombre casado. Pero dice que no por ello deja de contemplar a la mujeres españolas, que están entre las más bellas del mundo.

Piropo americano que no caerá en el vacío, ya que el mundo femenino ha conferido a Dean Reed el título de "cantante guapo"...

DEAN REED - AN AMERICAN IN MOSCOW

It was the sunset when the telephone rang. At the other end of the line, it was a familiar voice. It was the Public Relations manager of an excellent American singer, Dean Reed, who textually said to me: "He just came back from the Soviet Union with a load of interesting things to tell. You can get good information from him. We will be waiting for you at seven o'clock in my office."

I had to hurry to be there on time. It was the first time I had him in front of me. Nevertheless, at first sight, he seemed to be a pleasant, nice and cordial man. Not in vain, someone called him not long ago Dean "Simpatía" Reed.

Almost with no intention, I noticed in him "a bit" of pride for being the first American singer going through the "Iron Curtain" exclusively for professional reasons.

"People from Russia," he starts saying, "were longing to see a North American singer. My debut was in the Palace of Sports, because in the Soviet Union there is no clubs, and to see my performance, a big crowd of men, women, young people, and children had to be waiting in line from the night before. It was a tremendous success. In the first part I sang just a variety of jazz; but in the second one I sang modern songs."

How is the Russian Youth?

"The Russian youth is like the American and Spanish one; most of all you can see the resemblance in between the Russians and the Spaniards. They have a high level of education."

Dean Reed is the archetype of the intellectuals. He is multifaceted. Besides singing, he makes movies, writes and is very passionate for the latin languages. He speaks several, among them Spanish, perfectly well. Immediately we started addressing each other as "Tu" (casual way in Spanish) . It seemed we knew each other for years.

"The most famous singers in the Soviet Union are: Charles Aznavour, probably because he was born in Armenia, and had a very successful concert. Followed by Rita Pavone and The Beatles. They don't know any Spaniard singers. On the other hand, Antonio, the great Antonio the Ambassador of the Spanish dance, is well loved and worshiped by everybody. I think Spain should send more Antonios to Russia and Russia should send more of the Moisseiev ballet to Spain."

He takes a break, sinks his lips in a high quality crystal glass, drinks a good sip of lemmon juice and continues saying:

"Over there the records are sold by thousands, because they are very cheap. Imagine that a single, costs only 12 pesetas spanish money."

In the face of this information, I am atonished, bewildered and I ask to myself: Is that possible? How come we don't sell them here so cheap?

"I recorded a Long Play with sixteen songs; pay close attention, there are sixteen songs, no twelve, and here the sale price is 60 pesetas. So, in a short period of time the records became millionaires."

In your performances, who prevailed teenagers or adults?

"A seventy percent were adults and the thirty percent left were teenagers. A thing worth to mention, is that everybody was asking about Spain. There is some kind of fantasy the Russian people are unable to solve; but there is not doubt they are very interested in Spain."

Do they like modern songs?

"Undoubtedly. I tell you once more, that my trip to Russia has demonstrated me something that I firmly believed: In all the countries, young people are the same. I visited the houses of some young Russian people, whom we formed a good friendship. You know what called my attention the most? To see in each one of them, a copy of 'Don Quixote'. They told me that in that country the book of the immortal Cervantes is one of the best sellers."

What do you have to say about the "Iron Curtain"?

"I didn't even noticed it. I had the impresion to be in a democratic country. I had absolute freedom, I could take countless pictures, I have spoken with people in the streets and I have done whatever I wanted to."

He is sitting comfortably in a large easy chair, and accompanies every word with a different gesture.

"I was even invited by the authorities to the revolution parade. I was very close to the President. It was a nice thing. Ah! I almost forgot to tell you an important thing: every time we have toasted we have done for the peace. Probably because they know the consecuences of a new war will bring to them."

How many cities have you visited?

"Eight and I have given 39 concerts. I will come back next year."

As we can see, Dean Reed had gotten a resounding success in the USSR. I give a little turn to the interview and I ask:

What are your projects for the future?

"The most immediate is to make a movie with Massiel; it's title is 'Elbow to Elbow'. Later, I will take some rest in the 'Costa del Sol'; afterwards, I will to go to Italy to record and get ready for the San Remo Festival, where I will introduce myself with an Italian song; from there, I will go to Caracas and United States, where I will stay four weeks and I will come back to Spain. Then, we will call you back and we will chat again."

In spite that it was a cold afternoon, once the interview was over, we were strolling through the Gran Via madrileña. (A main road in Madrid). Our evening walk was interrrupted many times by fans asking for autographs. As an odd note, I have to say that Dean is a married man. But he says being married doesn't mean he can't look at the Spanish women, whom are one of the most beautiful in the world.

Flirtatious remark that won't be forgotten, since the feminine world has given to Dean the title of "The handsome singer"...

Dean Reed - Ein Amerikaner in Moskau

Es begann schon Abend zu werden, als ich das Telefon klingeln hörte. Am anderen Ende hörte ich eine bekannte Stimme. Es war der Public-Relation-Manager des ausgezeichneten amerikanischen Sängers Dean Reed, der wörtlich sagte: "Er ist gerade aus der Sowjetunion zurückgekommen und hat eine Menge interessanter Dinge zu erzählen. Du kannst von ihm gute Informationen erhalten. Wir erwarten dich um sieben in meinem Büro."

Ich musste mich beeilen, um pünktlich zu sein. Es war das erste Mal, dass ich ihn traf. Aber gleich auf den ersten Blick schien er mir ein angenehmer, herzlicher und sympathischer Mann zu sein. Nicht umsonst hatte ihm jemand erst kürzlich den Spitznamen Dean "Simpatía" Reed gegeben.

Fast ungewollt bemerke ich bei ihm ein bisschen Stolz darauf, dass er der erste amerikanische Sänger gewesen ist, der aus rein beruflichen Gründen den "Eisernen Vorhang" durchschritten hat.

"Die russischen Menschen", beginnt er zu erzählen, "wollten gern einmal einen amerikanischen Sänger sehen. Mein erstes Konzert gab ich im Sportpalast, weil es in der Sowjetunion keine Clubs gibt. Um mein Konzert zu erleben, mussten sehr viele Menschen, darunter Männer, Frauen, Jugendliche und Kinder, seit dem Abend davor Schlange stehen. Es war ein wunderbarer Erfolg. Im ersten Teil habe ich nur einige Jazz-Titel gesungen, aber im zweiten Teil dann modernere Sachen."

Wie ist die russische Jugend?

"Die russische Jugend ist genauso wie die amerikanische und die spanische Jugend. Ich habe vor allem eine große äußerliche Ähnlichkeit zwischen den russischen und den spanischen Jugendlichen festgestellt. Sie haben ein hohes kulturelles Niveau."

Dean Reed ist ein Mann, der perfekt dem Prototypen des Intellektuellen entspricht. Er ist sehr vielseitig. Neben seiner Arbeit als Sänger, Schauspieler und Schriftsteller begeistert er sich auch sehr für die romanischen Sprachen. Er spricht einige davon, darunter Spanisch, fast perfekt. Wir gingen dann in großer Vertraulichkeit zum "Du" über. Es war, als ob wir uns schon seit Jahren kennen.

"Die bekanntesten Sänger in der Sowjetunion sind Charles Aznavour, sicherlich weil er in Armenien geboren wurde und bei seinen Auftritten große Erfolge gefeiert hat, Rita Pavone und die Beatles. Spanische Sänger kennt man überhaupt nicht. Hingegen wird Antonio, der große Antonio, der Botschafter des spanischen Tanzes, von allen sehr geliebt und verehrt. Ich denke, dass Spanien mehr Antonios nach Russland schicken sollte, und Russland sollte öfter das Moissejew-Ballett nach Spanien schicken."

Er macht eine Pause, trinkt einen Schluck Zitronensaft aus dem feinen Kristallglas und fährt fort:

"Hier werden unter anderem Tausende von Schallplatten verkauft, weil sie sehr billig sind. Stell dir vor, eine Single kostet in spanisches Geld umgerechnet nur 12 Peseten."

Angesichts dieser Information bin ich etwas überrascht, perplex und frage mich: Ist das möglich? Und warum sind sie bei uns nicht so billig?

"Ich habe eine LP mit sechzehn Liedern aufgenommen. Hast du gemerkt: Es waren sechzehn, nicht zwölf! Diese Platte wird für 60 Peseten verkauft. So verkauft man in Rekordzeit Millionen von Platten."

Waren bei deinen Konzerten mehr Heranwachsende oder ältere Leute?

"Etwa siebzig Prozent waren Erwachsene und dreißig Prozent Jugendliche. Erwähnenswert ist, dass alle Leute mich nach Spanien gefragt haben. Es existiert immer noch diese Vorstellung, dass die Russen unkultiviert sind, aber ganz im Gegenteil: Sie interessieren sich für Spanien."

Sind die modernen Lieder dort gut angekommen?

"Zweifellos. Ich wiederhole noch einmal, dass meine Reise nach Russland mir etwas gezeigt hat, an das ich schon vorher fest geglaubt habe: Die Jugend ähnelt sich in allen Ländern. Ich war zu Hause bei einigen russischen Jugendlichen, mit denen ich Freundschaft geschlossen hatte. Weißt du, was mich am meisten überrascht hat? Bei fast allen habe ich eine Ausgabe von 'Don Quijote de La Mancha' gesehen. Sie sagten mir, dass das Buch in diesem Land unsterblich ist und Cervantes einer der meistverkauften Autoren ist."

Was kannst du mir von dem "eisernen Vorhang" erzählen"?

"Ich persönlich habe ihn nicht bemerkt. Ich hatte den Eindruck, in einem vollkommen demokratischen Land zu sein. Ich genoss absolute Freiheit. Ich konnte unzählige Fotos machen. Ich habe mit den Menschen auf der Straße gesprochen und auch sonst alles gemacht, was ich wollte."

Er sitzt bequem in einem breiten Sessel und begleitet jedes Wort mit einer anderen Geste.

"Ich wurde sogar von den Behörden zur Demonstration anlässlich des Revolutionsfeiertages eingeladen. Ich war ganz in der Nähe des Staatschefs. Das war sehr schön. Ach, fast hätte ich vergessen, dir etwas Wichtiges zu sagen: Immer wenn sie mit mir angestoßen haben, tranken wir auf den Frieden. Sicherlich, weil sie wissen, welche Folgen ein neuer Krieg für sie hätte."

Wie viele Städte hast du besucht?

"Acht, insgesamt habe ich 39 Konzerte gegeben. Nächstes Jahr werde ich wieder hinfahren."

Wie wir gesehen haben, konnte Dean Reed in der UdSSR glänzende Erfolge feiern. Ich lenke das Interview in eine andere Richtung und frage:

Welche Pläne hast du für die Zukunft?

"Das nächste Vorhaben ist ein Film zusammen mit Massiel, der den Titel 'Codo a codo' haben wird. Danach werde ich mich ein paar Tage an der Costa del Sol erholen. Später werde ich nach Italien reisen, um Aufnahmen für das Festival von San Remo zu machen, bei dem ich mich mit einem rein italienischen Lied vorstellen werde. Von dort werde ich nach Caracas und in die Vereinigten Staaten reisen, wo ich vier Wochen bleiben werde. Dann werde ich nach Spanien zurückkehren. Danach werden wir dich anrufen und noch weiter plaudern."

Obwohl es ein kühler Nachmittag war, gehen wir nach dem Interview noch auf der Gran Vía in Madrid spazieren. Unser nachmittäglicher Spaziergang wird immer wieder unterbrochen von Leuten, die ein Autogramm von Dean haben wollen. Dabei ist er doch verheiratet. Aber er sagt, dass er deshalb nicht aufhören wird, sich die spanischen Frauen anzusehen, die zu den schönsten der Welt gehören.

Ein Kompliment, das auf fruchtbaren Boden fällt, denn die Damenwelt hat Dean Reed den Titel "schöner Sänger" gegeben ...
