Anécdota histórica cuya acción transcurre en tiempos del emperador Maximiliano, en México. Sobre libro de Renato Izzo y Gianfranco Parolini, dirigió Frank Kramer, con fotografía de Sandro Mancori y música de Bruno Nicolai. Presenta el sello Artistas Unidos.

1. Las tropas austríacas al servicio del Emperador Maximiliano, deben cumplir importante misión: transportar un cargamento de oro para la adquisición de armas, con las que el resistido monarca podrá seguir manteniéndose en el poder. Jefes del destacamento mercenario son Metternich y Skimmel.
2. Por su parte, Sabata, un cazador de recompensas, pero que de cualquier manera cuenta con las simpatías de los revolucionarios mexicanos, con la colaboración de Ballantine, un astuto bandolero yanqui, y el patriota Escudo, se apresta a copar el destacamento portador de tan importante cargamento.
3. El pueblo odia al emperador, al sistema que lo mantiene en el poder y, muy especialmente, a los contingentes austríacos que, al mando de Metternich y Skimmel, cometen toda clase de depredaciones y crímenes contra la población inerme. Un nombre es bandera de esperanza para los mexicanos: Juárez.
4. La caravana militar emprende la marcha rumbo a su destino. Las bolsas que contienen el oro están apiladas en un carro que conducen soldados austríacos. Una fuerte custodia integra la misión. Mas ello no amilana a Sabata y sus compañeros, que aguardan en lugar propicio el paso de la caravana.

5. El operativo de Sabata, Ballantine y Escudo y su gente se cumple con éxito. Por sorpresa, protegidos entre las rocas, matan a no pocos soldados ponen en fuga al resto. Ya en poder del tesoro, descubren con desaliento que han sido engañados. Las bolsas encerradas en el cofre no contienen oro en polvo sino arena.
6. Juárez, al frente de las fuerzas del pueblo, ha cercado al emperador. La lucha es cruenta; finalmente, Maximiliano se rinde al denodado patriota. Todo acaece en forma vertiginosa. Huida de los traidores y de los mercenarios, y el país que celebra jubilosamente el triunfo sobre el extranjero enquistado en el poder.
7. Cuando Metternich y Skimmel comprueban con desaliento que todo ha terminado para ellos, reclutan unos cuantos soldados austríacos y emprenden la huida, llevándose el oro que debían haber empleado para la compra de armamentos. En desenfrenada carrera se dirigen hacia la frontera para ponerse a salvo.
8. Al pasar por un poblado, donde procuran dar un corto resuello a hombres y animales, son sorprendidos por los hombres de Escudo, Sabata y Ballantine. Pero un hábil despliegue estratégico de los jefes austríacos hace que Sabata y Escudo caigan en sus manos. Ordenan su fusilamiento esa misma tarde.
9. Cuando el patriota y su amigo están ya frente al pelotón de fusilamiento, Ballantine dispara, sin ser visto, sobre un carro de dinamita de los austríacos, provocando violenta explosión y el consiguiente revuelo y desconcierto, que es aprovechado por la reducida población para echarse sobre los austríacos.
10. Dominados éstos, Sabata y su gente corren a apoderarse del cargamento de oro; mas, cuál no será su sorpresa cuando descubren que el desaprensivo Ballantine ha huido con el carro rumbo a la frontera. Es perseguido por Sabata y Escudo y otros pocos hombres, quienes disparan sobre las bolsas de oro.
11. Un reguero de oro en polvo va dejando una estela del paso del carruaje que conduce Ballantine. Finalmente éste es capturado por sus perseguidores que le castigan rudamente, pero le perdonan la vida, pues no olvidan que fue un valiente y decidido colaborador en la lucha contra el opresor.

1. The Austrian troops under the orders of Emperor Maximillian, should accomplish an important mission: To transport a load of gold to purchase weapons, in order to keep the Emperor in the power. The heads of the mercenary detachment are Metternick and Skimmel.
2. In the other hand, Sabata a rewards' hunter, who counts with the Mexicans revolutionaries' support and the help of Ballantine an astute bandit, and the patriot Escudo, are plannig to assault the detachment carrying this important load.
3. The population hates the Emperor, the systems keeping him in power, and specially the Austrian contigents under the command of Metternick and Skimmel, committing all kind of depredation and crimes against the unarmed population. There is only one name that is keeping the Mexicans hopes high: his name: Juarez.
4. The military caravan is heading off to it's destiny. The bags containing the gold are piling up in a cart, driven by the Austrian soldiers. An strong guard is protecting the mission, but it's not an impediment for Sabata and his people whom are awaiting in the right place for the caravan to go by.
5. The operative with Sabata, Ballantine, Escudo and their people is successful. Protected behind the rocks and by surprise, they kill several soldiers while the rest of them run away. Once they have the treasure in their hands, they found out with dismay that they were swindled. The bags inside the trunk don't have gold, but sand.
6. Juarez commanding the people have sorrounded the Emperor. The fight is bloody; finally Maximillian gives up to the brave patriot. Every thing happens very quickly. Traitors and mercenaries running away and the country celebrating with joy the triumph over the foreign who was stuck in the power.
7. When Metternich and Skimmel realize with sorrow that everything is over for them, they recruit some Austrian soldiers and run away, taking along the gold destinated to buy weapons. They go for the frontier in a frantic run, to be safe.
8. When they stop in an small town to take some rest for them and the animals, they are surprised by Escudo, Sabata and Ballantine's men. But a strategic move from the part of the Austrians, put Sabata and Escudo in their hands. They order their execution the same evening.
9. When the patriot and his friend are in front of the firing squad, Ballantine shoots to the Austrian's carriage full of dyanmite without being seen, provocating a violent explosion followed by commotion and confusion. The small population take advantage of this situation to attack the Austrians.
10. Once they gave themselves up, Sabata and his people went to seize the load of gold, but for their surprise, they find out that the unscrupulous Ballantine had run away with the carriage and was heading for the frontier. He is chased down by Sabata, Escudo and a few men who were shooting to the bags of gold.
11. A trail of powder gold is falling from the carriage driven by Ballantine. Finally he is captured by his enemies who hit him very hard, but they spare him his life because they can't forget that he was a brave and determined comrade in the fight against the oppresor.

1. Die österreichischen Truppen im Dienste des Kaisers Maximilian haben einen wichtigen Auftrag zu erfüllen. Sie transportieren eine Ladung Gold, mit dem Waffen gekauft werden sollen, mit denen sich der halsstarrige Monarch weiter an der Macht halten kann. Metternich und Skimmel sind die Chefs des Söldnerkommandos.
2. Sabata ist auf der Jagd nach einer Belohnung, aber irgendwie ist er den mexikanischen Revolutionären sympathisch. Mit Hilfe des schlauen amerikanischen Banditen Ballantine und dem Patrioten Escudo bietet er sich an, die Truppe mit der wertvollen Ladung zu überfallen.
3. Das Volk hasst den Kaiser, das System, das ihn an der Macht hält, und besonders die österreichischen Truppen, die unter dem Kommando von Metternich und Skimmel jede Art von Plünderung und Verbrechen gegen die wehrlose Bevölkerung begehen. Ein Name wird zur Hoffnung für die Mexikaner: Juárez.
4. Die Militärkarawane zieht weiter. Die Säcke voller Gold liegen auf einem Wagen, der von österreichischen Soldaten geführt und gut bewacht wird. Aber das schreckt Sabata und seine Freunde nicht. Sie folgen der Karawane in gebührendem Abstand.
5. Die Mission von Sabata, Ballantine und Escudo und ihren Leuten ist erfolgreich. Mit einem Überraschungsangriff aus dem Schutz der Berge heraus töten sie viele Soldaten und schlagen den Rest in die Flucht. Als sie den Schatz bereits in den Händen halten, müssen sie enttäuscht feststellen, dass sie betrogen wurden. Die verschlossenen Säcke auf dem Wagen enthalten keinen Goldstaub, sondern Sand.
6. Juárez, der an der Spitze der Volkskräfte steht, hat den Kaiser eingekreist. Nach einem blutigen Kampf ergibt sich Maximilian dem mutigen Patrioten. Alles geschieht rasend schnell. Die Verräter und die Söldner fliehen und das Land feiert den Triumph über den ausländischen Machthaber.
7. Als Metternich und Skimmel merken, dass für sie alles zu Ende ist, heuern sie einige österreichische Soldaten an und flüchten mit dem Gold, das sie für den Kauf von Waffen hätten verwenden sollen. In einem zügellosen Ritt machen sie sich auf in Richtung Grenze, um sich zu retten.
8. Als sie an einem Dorf vorbeikommen, wo sich die Menschen und die Tiere kurz ausruhen, werden sie von den Männern um Escudo, Sabata und Ballantine überrascht. Aber durch die geschickte strategische Aufstellung der österreichischen Anführer fallen Sabata und Escudo ihnen in die Hände. Ihre Erschießung wird noch für denselben Abend angeordnet.
9. Als der Patriot und sein Freund bereits vor dem Erschießungskommando stehen, schießt Ballantine, ohne dass man ihn sieht, auf einen Wagen der Österreicher voller Dynamit und löst damit eine riesige Explosion aus. Die darauf folgende Aufregung und Verwirrung nutzt die zahlenmäßig unterlegene Bevölkerung, um sich auf die Österreicher zu werfen.
10. Als die besiegt sind, wollen Sabata und seine Leute das Gold an sich nehmen. Aber überrascht müssen sie feststellen, dass der rücksichtslose Ballantine mit dem Wagen in Richtung Grenze geflohen ist. Er wird von Sabata und Escudo sowie weiteren Männern verfolgt, die auf die Taschen mit dem Gold schießen.
11. Goldstaub rinnt aus den Säcken auf der Kutsche, die Ballantine fährt. Der wird schließlich von seinen Verfolgern festgenommen und schwer bestraft. Aber sie schenken ihm das Leben, denn sie haben nicht vergessen, dass er mutig und entschlossen gegen den Unterdrücker gekämpft hat.
