Mucho de nuestros lectores recordaran sin duda el paso del simpatico cantante norteamericano Dean Reed por España. El no pierde ocasión de exhibir por todo el mundo el nombramiento de "Don Hilarion" con que le distinguio el castizo barrio madrileño de Las Vistillas, honor del que dan fe las fotografias que le muestran entre la "Casta" y la "Susana", elegidas al mismo tiempo, en cordial evocacion de las famosas figuras de La Verbena de la Paloma.
Dean Reed, norteamericano de Colorado, pero que habla - y canta - un buen castellano, resulta en aquellas fotos un "Don Hilarion" mas puesto al dia aun que las "Casta" y "Susana" de falda corta 1966, entre las cuales aparece. Un "Don Hilarion" discretamente "actualizado" hubiera sido, por ejemplo, Miguel Ligero vestido a la moda masculina del ultimo verano. Pero un atletico muchachote norteamericano con aires de cow-boy y un extraño parecido con Roger Moore, el "Santo" de la television, resulta un rival mas que temido para el pobre "Julian", quien habria de comerse el sarcasmo con que refiriendose al "boticario", suele matizar, con el archifamoso duo, aquello de:
"¿Y quien es ese chico tan guapo...?"
Dean Reed, increiblemente joven y apuesto "Don Hilarion" de una noche del verano pasado en Las Vistillas, se hallaba estos dias pasado en Moscu, capital que ha visitado por segunda vez en poco mas de un año y desde la que hizo saber, al calor del éxito alli obtenido, que era el primer cantante norteamericano de musica popular y folk-songs que habia ido contratado por la U.R.S.S. "Estoy muy contento y espero que podre ayudar al acercamiento de los pueblos", nos escribe Dean Reed desde Moscu, depidiendose con un "Hasta pronto" que es prometedor de mas amplias y detalladas declaraciones, cuando visite de nuevo España.
Las impresiones de Dean Reed, simpatico, observador, y culto muchacho de formacion universitaria, es licenciado en Fisica, ademas de actor, compositor, y galardonado campeon de atletismo, siempre han de ser interesantes.
Dean Reed trabajo como ranchero para pagarse sus estudios. En los ratos libres tocaba la guitarra y, un buen dia, aprovechando unas vacaciones, se marcho a Hollywood, donde no tardaria en firmar un contrato por siete años con la casa Capitol. Su grabacion mas importante de aquel tiempo No la dejes irse, sirvio para la realizacion del film Ritmo Nuevo y vieja Ola, rodado en Argentina. A continuacion compuso Nuestro amor, y fue llamado por la TV norteamericana para actuar un año en sus pantallas.
Personalmente, ha trabajado en escenarios de Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Argentina y Mejico. En 1964 protagonizo Guadalajara en Verano, que obtuvo el primer premio del Festival de la Acapulco. Despues, mas peliculas, mas discos, mas paises hasta llegar a la U.R.S.S., donde, como hemos dicho, ya estuvo el año pasado y ha vuelto ahora, para dar venticuatro conciertos con orquesta (y con su guitarra).
"Soy un poco periodista", dijo recientemente Dean Reed, "y mis viajes me han inclinado a escribir. Colaboro en algunas revistas de mi pais y ahora estoy escribiendo un libro sobre mis experiencias vividas en la selva del Brasil: durante muchos meses he convivido con aquellas tribus."
Dean Reed esta casado y no cesa de alabar la habilidad de su mujer haciendo fotografias. Innecesario preguntar cual es el tema preferido de esas fotos. No puede ser otro que Dean Reed, el fotogenico y singular "Don Hilarion" de 1,85 de estatura, juventud desbordante, atletica complexion y el mundo entero por campo de sus andanzas, de cow-boy trovador, con la guitarra a la espalda y una cancion "pop" a flor de labios.

There is no doubt that many of our readers remember when the nice North American singer was in Spain. He doesn't miss an oportunity to show the world that the nomination of "Don Hilarion" was given to him by the people from the neighbordhood of "Las Vistillas" in Madrid. He confirmes this honor with the pictures showing him between the "Caste" and "Susana" chosen at the same time, to remember the famous figures of La Verbena de la Paloma.
Dean Reed, North American from Colorado, who speaks and sings good Castillian, looks in the pictures more fashionable than the "Caste" and "Susana" who are wearing 1966 miniskirts. A discreetly updated "Don Hilarion" could had been for example, Miguel Ligero dressed with the latest fashion for men from last summer. But this North American big boy looking as a cowboy and with a remarkable resemblance to Roger Moore "The Saint" from the TV show, is a fearsome rival for "Julian" who will have to eat the sarcasm when he has to ask the "pharmacist":

Dean Reed incredibly young and handsome "Don Hilarion" from a summer night in "Las Vistillas," was in Moscow a few days ago, visiting the city for the second time in a little more than a year, being the first North American Pop/folk singer hired by U.R.S.S. "I am very pleased and I hope to help with the rapprochement of the countries." He write us from Moscow and finishes it with "See you soon." This will be matter of a long and detailed declaration when he visits Spain again.
The comments coming from this nice, observant and educated young boy, a physics graduate besides of being an actor, composer and athletic's champion, are always interesting.
Dean Reed worked in a ranch to pay for his studies. In his free time he used to play the guitar, and one day taking advantage of his vacations, he went to Hollywood where he got a seven years contract with Capitol Records. His most important record at that time was Don't let her go, which was his passport to Argentina to make the movie Ritmo Nuevo, Vieja Ola. Next, he composed Our Summer Romance and was called by the North American TV getting a contract to perform for one year.
He has been working in Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Argentina y Mexico. In 1964 he played the lead role in Guadalajara en Verano winning the 1st prize in the Acapulco Festival. Afterwards, more movies, more records, more countries till he arrived to Rusia, where he was last year and came back again now, to give twenty four concerts accompanied by an orchestra (and his guitar).
"I have a little of a journalist in me", said recently Dean Reed, "and I want to write about my trips. I write in some magazines in my country and now I am writing a book about my experiences in the Brazilian jungle: I have lived several months around those tribes".
Dean Reed is married and he doesn't stop complimenting his wife's hobby as a photographer. Is innecesary to ask what is her favourite subject to photograph: It can't be other than Dean Reed the photogenic and unique "Don Hilarion" of 6.4" height, boundless youth, athletic complexion and who has the whole world for his adventures and as a trobaudor cowboy, carrying his guitar in his back and a "pop" song in his mouth.

Viele unserer Leser erinnern sich zweifellos an die Spuren des sympathischen US-amerikanischen Sängers Dean Reed in Spanien. Er lässt keine Gelegenheit aus, in aller Welt von seiner Ernennung zum "Don Hilarión" zu erzählen. Mit diesem Titel hat ihn das urwüchsige Madrider Stadtviertel Las Vistillas geehrt. Davon zeugen die Fotos, die ihn zwischen "Casta" und "Susana" zeigen, die zur gleichen Zeit in Erinnerung an die bekannten Figuren der Operette "La Verbena de la Paloma" ausgewählt wurden.
Dean Reed ist ein US-Amerikaner aus Colorado, aber er spricht - und singt - gut Spanisch. Auf den Fotos sieht er als "Don Hilarión" zeitgemäßer aus als "Casta" und "Susana", zwischen denen er steht und die kurze Röcke von 1966 tragen. Ein diskret modernisierter "Don Hilarión" wäre zum Beispiel Miguel Ligero in der Mode des letzten Sommers gewesen. Aber ein athletischer junger Mann aus den USA, den ein Hauch von Cowboy umgibt und der Roger Moore erstaunlich ähnlich sieht, dem "Heiligen" des Fernsehens, ist ein mehr als gefürchteter Rivale für den armen "Julián", der angesichts des bekannten Duos seinen Sarkasmus herunterschluckte und fragte:

Dean Reed, der unglaublich junge und sympathische "Don Hilarión" einer Nacht des vergangenen Sommers in Las Vistillas, befindet sich zur Zeit in Moskau. Er besucht diese Hauptstadt nun zum zweiten Mal innerhalb eines Jahres und lässt von dort mitteilen, dass er aufgrund seiner Erfolge der erste US-amerikanische Pop- und Folk-Sänger ist, dem die UdSSR einen Vertrag angeboten hat. "Ich freue mich sehr und hoffe, dass ich zur Völkerverständigung beitragen kann.", schreibt uns Dean Reed aus Moskau. Er verabschiedet sich mit einem "Bis bald". Das lässt weitere ausführlichere Erklärungen erwarten, wenn er wieder nach Spanien kommt.
Dean Reed hat immer einen interessanten Eindruck hinterlassen: sympathisch, beobachtend, ein gebildeter junger Mann mit universitärer Ausbildung, der seinen Abschluss in Physik gemacht hat und außerdem noch Schauspieler, Komponist und Leichtathletikchampion ist.
Dean Reed arbeitet als Cowboy, um sich sein Studium zu verdienen. In seiner Freizeit spielte er Gitarre und eines Tages fuhr er in seinen Ferien nach Hollywood, wo er schon bald einen 7-Jahres-Vertrag mit dem Label "Capitol" unterzeichnete. Sein wichtigster Erfolg aus jener Zeit, der Titel Don't let her go, stammt aus dem in Argentinien gedrehten Film Ritmo Nuevo, Vieja Ola. Dann komponierte er Our Summer Romance und das US-amerikanische Fernsehen rief ihn an und bot ihm einen Ein-Jahres-Vertrag an.
Er hatte Auftritte in Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Argentinien und Mexiko. 1964 spielte er die Hauptrolle in dem Film Guadalajara en Verano, der auf dem Festival von Acapulco der ersten Preis errang. Danach drehte er weitere Filme, nahm weitere Schallplatten auf und trat in vielen Ländern auf, bis er in die UdSSR kam, wo er, wie gesagt, im vorigen Jahr schon einmal war. Jetzt kehrt er dorthin zurück und gibt 24 Konzerte zusammen mit einem Orchester (und seiner Gitarre).
"Ich bin ein bisschen auch Journalist", sagte Dean Reed kürzlich, "und meine Reisen haben mich zum Schreiben angeregt. Ich schreibe für einige Zeitschriften in meiner Heimat und außerdem arbeite ich zur Zeit an einem Buch über meine Erlebnisse im brasilianischen Urwald, wo ich viele Monate mit Indianerstämmen gelebt habe."
Dean Reed ist verheiratet und lobt seine Frau für ihre guten Fotos. Es erübrigt sich zu fragen, welches das bevorzugte Thema dieser Fotos ist. Natürlich Dean Reed, der fotogene und einzigartige "Don Hilarión" mit seiner Größe von 1,85 m, seiner überbordenden Jugend, seinem athletischen Aussehen, den die ganze Welt liebt. Er ist der singende Cowboy mit der Gitarre auf dem Rücken und einem Popsong auf den Lippen.
