Dean Reed también desfiló por los negros
El juvenil cantante norteamericano, que tantos éxitos conquistó entre nosotros, también participó en la marcha que con el lema de "¡Libertad ahora!" se realizó en Los Angeles, en apoyo del proyecto del Presidente Kennedy de igualdad para los ciudadanos negros de Estados Unidos. El diario "Los Angeles Times" del 29 de Agosto cita a Dean Reed entre los artistas que participaron en las demostraciones. Dean nos escribió inmediatamente, confirmando la noticia.
"Ahora estoy usando toda mi fuerza como artista en ayudar a los negros en su pelea por sus derechos civiles - escribe -. Hicimos una gran desmostración en Washington, y después aquí, en Los Angeles. Vor a ir a Alabama para ser el líder de una demostración la semana que viene" (la carta está fechada el 2 de septiembre).
En párrafo aparte, comenta:
"Ya se habran dado cuenta de que mis ideas descabelladas de hace dos años han sido aceptadas, y ahora los grandes líderes de todas las naciones van a firmar un tratado para eliminar las pruebas atómicas. Ahora todo el mundo está de acuerdo. Pero entonces yo era un 'camorrista'. ¿No es divertido? Aquí va una nota para todos los Chilenos:
Mis Queridos amigos -
Ahora es una gran hora en la historia del mundo. Las naciones grandes del mundo van a firmar un acuerdo para terminar las pruebas atómicas.
Estoy seguro que sus cartas que ustedes mandaron a Kennedy y Khrushev hace dos años atrás, pidiento la terminación de las pruebas atómicas, han ayudado mucho en arreglar este acuerdo ahora.
Yo quiero agradecerles en el nombre del humanidad por sus servicios.

Dean Reed marched in behalf of the black people
The youthful North American singer who has been so succesful among us, participated in a march named "Freedom now!" in Los Angeles, backing up the President Kennedy's project, to get equal rights for the black citizens in United States. The "Los Angeles Times" newspaper from August 29th named Dean Reed among the artists participating in the demonstration. Dean wrote us right away, confirming the news.
"I am using now all my power as an artist to help the black people in their fight for their civil rights", he writes. "We made a big demonstration in Washington and afterwards here in Los Angeles. I am going to Alabama as a leader for a demonstration next week." (The letter is dated September 2.)
In a separated paragraph he comments:
"Now, you will understand that my crazy ideas from 2 years ago, have been accepted, and now the main leaders from all nations are going to sign a treatise to eliminate the nuclear testings. Now everybody agrees. But then, I was a 'troublemaker'. Isn't that funny? Here goes a note for the Chileans:
My dear friends,
Now is a great moment in the history of the world. The main nations of the world, are going to sign an agreement to end the nuclear testings.
I am sure that the letters you sent to Kennedy and Khrushev two years ago, asking for the ending of the nuclear testings have helped to make this arrangement now.
I would like to thank you in behalf of the humanity for your help.

Dean Reed marschierte auch für die Schwarzen
Der junge US-amerikanische Sänger, der bei uns schon so große Erfolge feierte, nahm auch an dem Marsch unter der Losung "Freiheit jetzt!" teil, der in Los Angeles stattfand und das Projekt von Präsident Kennedy zur Gleichstellung der schwarzen Bürger unterstützte. Die Zeitung "Los Angeles Times" vom 29. August nennt Dean Reed als einen der Künstler, die an den Demonstrationen teilnahmen. Dean schrieb uns sofort und bestätigt die Nachricht.
"Jetzt nutze ich meine ganze Kraft als Künstler, um den Schwarzen in ihrem Kampf für ihre Bürgerrechte zu helfen", schreibt er. "Wir hatten eine große Demonstration in Washington und danach hier, in Los Angeles. Ich werde nun nach Alabama fahren, um dort in der nächsten Woche eine Demonstration anzuführen." (Der Brief trägt das Datum vom 2. September.)
In einem anderen Absatz kommentiert er:
"Ihr werdet schon gemerkt haben, dass meine irrwitzigen Ideen von vor zwei Jahren inzwischen akzeptiert worden sind. Jetzt werden die großen Führer aller Nationen einen Vertrag über das Verbot von Atomtest unterzeichnen. Jetzt ist die ganze Welt einverstanden. Aber damals war ich ein 'Krawallmacher'. Ist das nicht komisch? Hier kommt eine Mitteilung für alle Chilenen:
Meine lieben Freunde!
Eine große Stunde der Weltgeschichte steht bevor. Die großen Nationen der Welt werden einen Vertrag über das Verbot von Atomtests unterzeichnen.
Ich bin sicher, dass die Briefe, in denen ihr Kennedy und Chruschtschow vor zwei Jahren um die Beendigung der Atomtest gebeten habt, viel dazu beigetragen haben, dass dieser Vertrag jetzt zustande kommt.
Ich möchte euch im Namen der Menschheit herzlich dafür danken.
